Women’s Equality Day Article

The Struggle for Women is Finally Over
By: Omarr Lee, OST

As a woman in the United State of America, why shouldn’t I have a fair chance to express my opinion? Don’t I breathe the same air as he does? I mean, don’t we eat the same foods? In fact, don’t we live in the same nation, but yet, we don’t have the same rights.

In the late 19th century and early 20th century, these were a few questions asked by a significant amount of women in the US. On August 26, 1920, their questions were finally answered, and they were given the right to vote. On that very special day, the 19th amendment was passed, and it granted women all through the US the equal right to vote. This authentic right was originally initiated by Rep. Bella Abzug because she openly believed that all women should have that right.

In fact, this special voting privilege for women is commemorated every year on the same date it was passed. The right to vote is a basic privilege that every citizen in the US should have. So, there is no doubt that this very essential holiday is cherished by every woman in America. The holiday is officially known as Women’s Equality Day, and it has been around ever since it was established as a holiday in 1971. Everyone can truthfully see why the amendment was, and still is a very deserving right for women.

Nowadays, we have notable women leaders like Madeleine Albright, who was the first woman U.S. Secretary of State. Another notable figure is Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is the only first-lady to ever be elected to the Senate, and there are a large number of other prominent women in America. There are well-known women in business, government, arts, education, and few other areas, but factually speaking, if it wasn’t for the passing of this amendment, would this all be possible? Would America be as equal as it is today?

Men and women relate in many ways because both genders share some of the same ideas and beliefs. They can likewise differ in a multitude of ways, but you must remember that her vote is just as important as his vote, and his vote is just as important as her vote. We all reside in the same neighborhoods, and we all live in the same cities. So we must all unite and work together to improve our nation.
