Great story on Women’s History

from the Ottawa Citizen

Her-story
A flood of female scholars has had a profound impact on the study of history

From the end of the 19th century, when doctoral programs in history were first established at North American universities, through the Second World War, interpretation of the past was largely the prerogative of men. Women earned about 20 per cent of doctorates during those years, but for the most part could only find appointments at teaching schools or all-female colleges. During the 1950s, the proportion of doctorates going to women actually dropped, to about 10 per cent. In 1960, there was not a single woman among the 160 full professors in the 10 leading graduate departments in the United States.

The past 40 years, however, have witnessed a sea change. In 2005, women received more than 42 per cent of all history PhDs awarded in North America. Female scholars currently represent 33 per cent of the faculty in history departments in Canada, more than 40 per cent of all young professors. The president of the Canadian Historical Association (CHA) is a woman, as is the president of the American Historical Association (AHA).
