Female Athlete Bloggers Take Control Of Sports Coverage

WomenTalkSports.com is a grassroots network for athletes and enthusiasts to promote women’s sports through blogging
LOS ANGELES,  /Dec 2/  — WomenTalkSports, LLC, has made it their mission to raise the level of awareness for female athletes. By leveraging the latest Web 2.0 technologies and bringing together some of the most enthusiastic fans of women in sport, the network has taken control of sports coverage and created a unique grassroots movement for increased attention of female athletes.
WomenTalkSports.com publishes content from over 65 contributors ranging from professional athletes like Jessica Mendoza, Jennie Finch, Angela Ruggiero, Chantelle Anderson, and Brianna Glenn to coaches like Louisiana State University’s (LSU) Bob Starkey and academic researchers like Penn State’s Marie Hardin and University of Minnesota’s Nicole Lavoi.  All contributors have one key value in common: a passion for increased coverage of female athletes.
“It’s clear that women in sport need a dedicated platform to celebrate their passion as well as the challenges they face. By joining together, we amplify our voices and are better able to bring women’s sports into the mainstream,” says Jane Schonberger, Publisher & Editor-In-Chief of WomenTalkSports.

The network was launched by co-founders Jane Schonberger, Ann Gaffigan and Megan Hueter in February 2009. As media professionals and athletes, the trio was keenly aware of the challenges facing women in sports.

“We kept thinking that if sites like Deadspin could create massive discussions about men’s sports, we could do the same for women. All we had to do was start talking to each other and create a community,” says co-founder Megan Hueter. “Turns out we were right.”

ESPN basketball analyst Nancy Lieberman says, “We need people like you. If you’re not blogging about us, why should we ask a dude to do it? We need to take care of our own business.”

Professional athletes are finding value in social media and turn to the WomenTalkSports network as their home.  “Through social networking, we’re able to get our voices out there. I can reach whoever it is who wants to know about me. WomenTalkSports helps us connect with all the people who need to know we’re more than just athletes,” says Women’s Sports Foundation President Jessica Mendoza.

WomenTalkSports.com covers a wide range of sports ranging from women’s basketball, softball and soccer to judo, MMA, skateboarding and wakeboarding. The editors highlight relevant news and issues by leveraging the latest Web 2.0 technologies to feature most popular topics. In addition to publishing contributors’ blog posts, the site continuously crawls the Web and for female sports headlines, tweets, events and other tools, publishing them not only directly to the site, but also on Facebook and Twitter.
