Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo NY celebrates Womens History Month

Joining the national effort to write women back into history, Forest Lawn Cemetery has announced the addition of a fifth program to their new winter concert and lecture series. Presented as a part of Forest Lawn’s 13th year of Sunday in the Cemetery Tours, Women Who Changed the Face of Buffalo will take place at 2:00 p.m. February 28 in the Forest Lawn Chapel.

Ted Dibble, Western New York history buff and genealogist will present a one-hour PowerPoint presentation to highlight the many powerful and industrious women who accomplished many monumental tasks that reshaped the City of Buffalo.

Notable women will feature numerous suffragettes as well as Helen Rodgers and Cecil Wiener, the first two female graduates of the U.B. Law School; Charlotte Mulligan, founder of many women’s organizations and a home for unemployed men; Jane Carroll, mother of ten who earned both medical and law degrees; Dr. Regina Flood Keys, who, because of her gender, was denied local practice but who worked on the front lines in WWI and became a POW in WWII; Mary Talbert, Marian deForest, Shirley Chisolm and many others.
The presentation will be accompanied by organist, Bruce Woody, on the Chapel’s original Wurlitzer.

Joseph Dispenza, President of Forest Lawn stated: “Our “History of Music in Buffalo” event in January was Standing-Room-Only. We decided to add to the exciting series by joining the National Women in History Event to spotlight famous women of Buffalo. Not enough people know their amazing stories! This will be a program that can be enjoyed by all generations of Buffalonians.”

Forest Lawn’s designed chapel is acoustically magnificent with vaulted ceilings, marble wainscoting, and enormous stained glass windows. Tickets are priced at $15.
Tickets are available at the front desk of Forest Lawn at the corner of Delaware and Delavan Avenues, or by calling 885-1600.

Forest Lawn was founded in 1849 and is listed on both State and National Registers of Historic Places.
