Celebrating Eleanor Roosevelt’s Birthday

Eleanor Roosevelt was of the great human rights activists of the 20th Century. During her four terms in the White House, she dramatically broke with tradition, refusing to accept the established role of wife and hostess. Instead, driven by compassion, enthusiasm, and devotion to bettering society, she eagerly embraced public policy, social issues, civil rights, and international human rights, earning the nickname ‘First Lady of the World.’ Eleanor felt that her most important work, improving the lives of people across the globe, was accomplished after her years in the White House. Eleanor’s words, like her actions, have long been used to encourage and to inspire those of us who sometimes feel weak at heart.

She reminded us that “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do”.
