Anna Quindlen writes about Houston…

Thirty years ago next month, 2,000 elected and appointed delegates and 18,000 observers gathered in Houston for the National Women’s Conference. It was the first meeting of its kind since the 1848 gathering in Seneca Falls, N.Y., put forth the then shocking proposition that all people, women included, were created equal. Incredible as it may seem today, the Houston conference was sponsored by the federal government and brought together in the same room, for perhaps the last time in memory, those groups on opposite sides of such incendiary issues as abortion and gay rights.
