New York Event: Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad, the Cause of Slavery & Us

This unique workshop is designed to help children learn about a woman tremendously important in American history, Harriet Tubman.   They learn about the cause of slavery; and about how the Underground Railroad actually worked to enable enslaved persons to escape.

The event is abundant with lively and engrossing maps, graphics, drama.  They learn about how important knowledge and the desire to know were to Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.  The children attending enact an exciting play—taken from Sarah Bradford’s book Harriet Tubman—The Moses of Her People, about a successful escape led by Harriet Tubman and Thomas Garrett.

As they do, everyone also begins to understand, based on the education Aesthetic Realism, founded by poet and philosopher Eli Siegel, that there is a fight in every person between the desire for respect, as represented by the Underground Railroad, and the desire for contempt, which was the cause of slavery and racism.

They learn about the thing that makes us feel proud—to want to learn, to respectfully think about what other people deserve, to have a lastingly good effect.  School groups at libraries, historical societies, schools have been thrilled and educated by this event.

The presenters are Devorah Tarrow, sociologist and Aesthetic Realism consultant; and Barbara McClung, NYC public school teacher.  For information, contact dtarrow@aestheticrealism.org .
