TEXAS WOMEN’S HISTORY on Public Radio KUT

The Ruthe Winegarten Foundation for Texas Women’s History is partnering with KUT public radio in Austin to present a daily “moment” in Texas women’s history.  Each day in March 2011, KUT will broadcast a 90-second story about such women as Bessie Coleman, Angelina, Oveta Culp Hobby, and Jovita Idar.

The KUT website will provide visuals, scripts, “brain teasers,” and a map showing the various places these women were active. Those not within KUT’s range (90.5 FM in Austin), can tune in online at www.KUT.org.
The Ruthe Winegarten Foundation for Texas Women’s history is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization designed to foster interest and research in Texas Women’s History. It sponsors the Ruthe Winegarten Award for the best research paper in women’s history for the Junior and Senior divisions at Texas History Day and the website www.womenintexashistory.org ,where, following the conclusion of the KUT series, all items mentioned above as well as the 31 daily recordings will be available.
The foundation’s name honors the woman considered the “mother of Texas women’s history”.  Winegarten was a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association, a tireless researcher, speaker, and advocate for the collection and dissemination of women’s stories who contributed hundreds of ideas for articles during the revision of the Handbook of Texas, published over 20 books, videos, and a musical, and won the Liz Carpenter Award from TSHA twice.
