In Honor of Mother’s Day: Meet Flora Mae Smith

In 1964, Flora Mae Smith decided that her children would not be attending the “separate but equal” Douglas High School. So, she walked into Key West High and quietly informed the Superintendent of Schools that her husband, Bernard C. Smith, was serving as an officer in the U.S. Military, and that her children, therefore, deserved the opportunity to receive the same quality education as their white counterparts. Her children enrolled. There were no incidents.
